The Provence Travel Writing School
The Provence Travel Writing School combines a holiday in Provence with the opportunity to develop writing skills by attending seminars lead by distinguished travel writers.
The school is based in the Luberon just north of Aix en Provence. Students will stay in the village of Lourmarin, which over the years has inspired a diverse collection of writers including Albert Camus, Samuel Beckett, the Marquis de Sade and Peter Mayle.
The course has three key aims:
1. Inspire students to write
2. Teach students the essential techniques of good travel writing
3. Help students to get published
Our overriding philosophy is that the course must be fun. Practical writing exercises are combined with opportunities to explore the local region.
The 2011 spring workshop will take place in March next year. Dates to be confirmed.
Course leaders:
Jamie Ivey - Jamie Ivey is the author of three travel books about the south of France. His books have been published in the UK, the US, the Netherlands and China. He has contributed articles about the south of France to national UK newspapers and is the author of the Luberon and Les Alpilles section of the TimeOut Guide to the south of France.
Jon Bryant - Jon Bryant is a journalist based in the South of France. He regularly writes for the travel section of the Telegraph and contributes to the Observer, the Guardian, Independent and the Times. He is a correspondent for France magazine and writes for several other French- focused publications.
Programme:
There will be at least one two-hour writing seminar a day, plus the opportunity for one-on-one tutorials with the course leaders. The course provides an overview of the travel writing industry and seminars focus on newspaper and magazine journalism as well as travel books. Students are encouraged to write as much as possible by a series of real-life exercises. The best piece of work from the course will be published in the 2011 edition of Blue Sky Living Provence.
A trip to Aix-en-Provence and a morning at a Provencal market are part of the course itinerary.
Cost and travel information
Lourmarin is approximately 1 hour’s drive from Avignon and Marseille airports.
The writing course costs £900 per person including all accommodation, food and house wine. Participants are expected to organise their own flights. An airport pick up at Marseille is included in the price if participants arrive and depart on the recommended flights (easyJet, Ryanair and British Airways all fly from Gatwick to Marseille). If you are unable to take a recommended flight please contact the course organisers and we will assist with making alternative arrangements.
Prices are based upon two same sex people sharing a twin room. Accommodation will be based in the village of Lourmarin. The single room supplement is £125.
The rate for non-writing partners is £600. This includes accommodation, excursions, meals and wine but not attendance at the course seminars. For non-writers the village is an interesting place to stay with plenty to do and see. Depending on the number of non-writers on the course the agenda can be adapted upon request. Tennis and art lessons can be organised as well as golf at one of the nearby courses. Non-writers are advised that hiring their own transport is strongly advised.
